The Russian Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday that its preliminary conclusion was that a bomb had brought down Metrojet Flight 9268 on Oct. 31 as it flew from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt to the Russian city of St Petersburg. Interior Minister Rashid Mhumud confirmed on Wednesday that an investigation into the crash had found evidence of a bomb. "Yes, it is true. A bomb was planted in the plane, and there was a strong blast," he told reporters at the prosecutor's office in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. Mhumud added that the blast had come from outside the plane. The pilot, of Egyptian origin, and the co-pilot, also Egyptian, had been killed when the plane went down in the Mediterranean Sea in a region ruled by Islamic State. The latest allegations of a bomb on board come as Egypt is struggling to deal with militants who have launched a series of deadly assaults in recent weeks, including the bombing of a Russian airliner that killed more than 200 people. Nabil Hanoun, a spokesman for the military prosecutors, said a Russian crime lab was being sent to Egypt to examine the aircraft. A leading Egypt expert on terrorism, Abdelrahman Mohsen, said on Thursday that the bomb could have been placed during the flight, but not by an Islamic State supporter who had planted the bomb in the plane. He said that any such scenario could have occurred only in the final stages of preparing the plane, since the incident took place several hours into the flight. Mhumud said that security forces had not found any explosive materials or hidden bombs in the plane.
